Grand Lisboa Palace Pioneers Carbon-Neutral MICE in Asia

Macau’s Leadership in Carbon-Neutral MICE Initiatives

SJM Resorts, S.A. has set a new benchmark in the integrated MICE venue landscape with its Grand Lisboa Palace Resort Macau becoming the first in Greater China to achieve sustained carbon neutrality. This accomplishment marks a strategic shift in Asia’s MICE sector towards sustainability and underscores Macau’s commitment to becoming a hub for eco-friendly events. The initiative is anchored by high-quality carbon credits and coincides with the introduction of Macau’s first Zero-Carbon MICE Service. This service provides event organisers powerful tools to reduce, measure, and offset environmental impacts.

The launch was a focal point of the SJM Green MICE Forum and the Zero-Carbon MICE Product Launch, showcasing a collaborative spirit among over 150 business leaders, sustainability experts, and stakeholders. These discussions were aimed at exploring sustainable MICE opportunities and contributing to the low-carbon economy, demonstrating the potential of Macau as a leading sustainable events destination in Asia.

Strategic Partnerships for Sustainable Growth

To bolster its sustainable initiatives, SJM signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Macau International Carbon Emission Exchange, establishing a comprehensive carbon neutrality framework. This collaboration emphasizes improving carbon management capabilities and promoting a zero-carbon MICE ecosystem. By partnering with international stakeholders, SJM aims to strengthen the global influence of Macau’s MICE industry.

The Grand Lisboa Palace’s carbon-neutral status was achieved through a strategic approach that included purchasing a diverse portfolio of carbon credits. Among these, China Certified Emission Reductions (CCERs) and credits from Portuguese-speaking countries formed a significant part of their strategy. Their rigorous carbon accounting assessments indicated annual emissions of approximately 5,827 tonnes of CO₂e, which were fully offset, leading to formal certification of carbon neutrality.

Comprehensive Zero-Carbon Solutions

Daisy Ho, Managing Director of SJM, stressed the importance of sustainability in advancing Macau’s MICE industry. She highlighted that their Zero-Carbon MICE services are designed to empower clients with comprehensive, measurable, and verifiable environmental data. These capabilities not only fulfill sustainability objectives but also bolster Macau’s standing as Asia’s premier sustainable event destination.

The Zero-Carbon MICE Service offers a robust framework for sustainable event planning. It covers environmentally responsible operations, recycling initiatives, sustainable catering, carbon impact reporting, and certification. By addressing every facet of event lifecycle sustainability, SJM aims to enhance corporate clients’ ESG reporting and boost their sustainability performance management, meeting the growing expectations for transparent environmental disclosure.

Impact on Asia’s MICE Industry and Beyond

The Grand Lisboa Palace’s sustainability efforts are aligned with its ISO 20121:2024 Event Sustainability Management System and its LEED Silver certification. Moreover, its participation in the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) reflects a broader commitment to global sustainability standards.

The SJM Green MICE Forum provided valuable insights through keynote presentations and panel discussions on carbon markets, sustainable tourism, and ESG-driven value creation. Industry leaders highlighted the increasing significance of carbon markets, cross-sector partnerships, and measurable sustainability outcomes. These discussions are essential in driving the growth of the MICE industry across Asia, demonstrating that sustainability is no longer a niche but a standard expectation.

Conclusion: A Forward-Thinking Approach in MICE

The Grand Lisboa Palace in Macau is paving the way for a significant shift in the MICE industry towards environmental responsibility. SJM’s carbon-neutral achievement and innovative Zero-Carbon MICE Service exemplify how integrated resorts can lead by example in sustainability. As stakeholders worldwide continue to prioritize eco-friendly solutions, Macau’s model offers a viable blueprint for integrating carbon-neutral initiatives into the fabric of the industry. This not only enhances Macau’s reputation but also sets the stage for other Asian markets to follow suit, amplifying the collective achievements of an eco-conscious business sphere.
