Impact of Rain and Competition
During the recent Dragon Boat Festival, hotels in Macau Peninsula dealt with less than optimal occupancy rates, partly due to inclement weather. Heavy rain dampened travel enthusiasm, while newer hotels in nearby Zhuhai and Hengqin also drew away potential guests, according to the Macau Hotel Association.
Optimistic Summer Projections
Despite the current challenges, the summer season looks promising for Macau’s hotel sector. Promotional strategies intend to drive occupancy up to 90 percent, enticing guests with deals designed for extended stays.
Changing Visitor Preferences
Visitor habits are evolving, with more travelers opting for accommodations in Zhuhai and Hengqin. Areas such as NAPE and older districts on the Macau Peninsula experienced approximately 80 percent occupancy, with some hotels reporting room rate declines.
Mainland and International Demographics
Mainland China is still a key market, contributing significantly to guest numbers. Short-haul visitors from Greater Bay Area locales represent a notable portion, while South Korea ranks as the leading international source market.
Initiatives to Attract Tourists
To boost tourism, operators are crafting summer packages with incentives like discounted stays and dining deals. Additionally, participation in tourism events in Southeast Asia is planned, aiming to expand the visitor base from countries such as Thailand and Indonesia.
Efforts in this direction align with the initiative to achieve new milestones in visitor numbers.
