Malawi Sports Betting Licence Deadline Approaches

Deadline Imminent for Licence Applications

The window for sports betting licence applications in Malawi is closing, with the final date set for July 10. Operators are required to comply with a specific licensing framework that includes assessments of financial integrity, beneficial ownership, and regulatory compliance. MAGLA has reiterated that late submissions will not be entertained, emphasizing the urgency for operators to complete their applications on time.

Application Process and Fees

The Malawi Gaming and Lotteries Authority began accepting applications on June 8, inviting both local and international operators to apply for sports betting and land-based casino licences. Under the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 2022, separate processes govern these applications. While the sports betting deadline is July 10, casino licence applications are open until July 15. Local operators must pay a K2m (US$1,153) fee for the RFP, whereas international applicants face a K2.6m (US$1,500) charge.

Evaluation Standards

The evaluation of applications will adhere to the Gaming and Lotteries Act, 2022, and the Sports Betting Regulations, 2025. Criteria outlined in the published Request for Proposals will guide MAGLA’s assessments of potential licencees’ financial and regulatory suitability.

Comprehensive Due Diligence

Applicants will undergo rigorous checks, including an analysis of their financial standing, beneficial ownership, and overall regulatory compliance. This ensures only qualified operators will enter Malawi’s sports betting market, safeguarding the industry’s integrity.

Conclusion

With the deadline fast approaching, operators are racing against time to fulfill all requirements. MAGLA’s structured process aims to develop a fair and transparent market for sports betting in Malawi.
