Estoril Sol Faces $28.8M Loss in 2025 Amid Challenges

Estoril Sol’s Financial Performance in 2025

Casino operator Estoril Sol, under the control of Macau’s Sociedade de Turismo e Diversões de Macau (STDM), reported a significant financial setback in 2025 with a €25.3 million ($28.8 million) loss attributed to its parent company’s shareholders. This marks a substantial increase from the €12.1 million ($13.8 million) loss recorded in 2024, as detailed in the annual financial statement released on July 20.

Major Factors Behind the Losses

The increased loss experienced by Estoril Sol primarily stems from diminished revenue streams and escalated operating expenses associated with its Estoril gaming concession, which includes Casino Estoril and Casino Lisboa. The company endured a €13.2 million ($15.1 million) asset impairment tied to the concession and a further €3.3 million ($3.8 million) restructuring provision.

Revenue and Operational Insights

The combined total of land-based and online gaming revenue witnessed a decline of 2% to €207.3 million ($236.5 million). While the revenue from traditional casinos diminished by 4%, the online sector saw a modest growth of 3%. Consolidated EBITDA experienced a 12% decrease, reaching €25.4 million ($29 million).

Changes in Concession and Shareholdings

STDM maintains a controlling interest in Estoril Sol through its 57.79% stake held by Finansol. The company also holds a 54.81% stake in SJM Holdings, a significant player in Macau’s gambling sector. Estoril Sol opted not to renew its concession for Casino Póvoa, which concluded on April 30, 2026, yet the casino remained profitable in 2025, accruing around €5 million ($5.7 million).

Future Requirements and Financial Planning

As the company navigates these challenges, its subsidiary, Estoril Sol III, requires an equity infusion of approximately €35 million ($39.9 million) in order to align with Portuguese gaming regulations. This financial strategy is pivotal for sustaining stability in the coming years.

Conclusion

Estoril Sol’s 2025 financial results underscore the complex environment faced by casino operators amid evolving market pressures. As the group outlines its future course, key stakeholders will be closely watching to understand potential outcomes and strategic adjustments in an ever-changing gambling landscape.
