Malaysian Authorities Seize $323K Crypto in Betting Bust

Authorities Target Online Betting Syndicates

In a decisive move against illegal gambling, Malaysian police have disrupted a suspected online betting network tied to the 2026 FIFA World Cup. The operation took place in Kuala Lumpur, culminating in the arrest of 11 individuals and the confiscation of significant sums of cryptocurrency and cash.

Details of the Raid in Kuala Lumpur

On the morning of July 9th, personnel from the D7 anti-vice division executed the raid on an office located on the eighth floor of a commercial building in Taman Desa. Kuala Lumpur police chief Datuk Fadil Marsus revealed that a Canadian national allegedly led the syndicate, which used the location to facilitate and market online wagers on World Cup fixtures.

Seizure of Cryptocurrency and Cash

The police secured cryptocurrency credits valued at around $323,380. The funds are believed to represent bets placed on four semi-final matches of the FIFA World Cup 2026. Additionally, authorities seized MYR18,817 in physical currency.

Suspects Apprehended

The arrested individuals included six South Korean males, three Malaysian males, and two Malaysian females. Investigations suggest one of the Malaysian women managed the operations and bolstered promotional activities for the betting syndicate.

Legal Proceedings Underway

The suspects are currently undergoing investigation at the Kuala Lumpur police headquarters under Section 4(1)(e) of Malaysia’s Common Gaming Houses Act 1953. The police emphasize their dedication to dismantling illegal betting schemes, especially during global sporting events known for increasing betting activities.
