Nationwide Crackdown on Illegal Gambling
The Royal Malaysia Police have initiated a comprehensive operation known as Op Soga XI to tackle illegal gambling activities anticipated during the upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup. This initiative spans across all states, as authorities brace for a potential increase in sports betting activities linked to the event.
Focus Areas: Online and Physical Gambling
Under the guidance of Datuk M. Kumar, Director of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department, the operation will target both digital and physical forms of illegal betting. Online efforts will concentrate on dismantling syndicates running illicit betting platforms and social media promotions, while physical actions will focus on unauthorised gambling venues and agents.
Collaboration with Key Agencies
The operation is enhanced by strategic alliances with the Malaysian Communications and Multimedia Commission and Bank Negara Malaysia. These agencies are crucial in pinpointing and obstructing digital platforms and financial dealings connected to illegal gambling networks.
Legal Framework and Consequences
Offenders involved in these illicit activities can expect actions under several laws, including the Common Gaming Houses Act 1953 and the Anti-Money Laundering Act 2001. The aim is to curb illegal wagering effectively.
Background of Op Soga and Future Outlook
Op Soga is a recurring initiative during major international football events. Its previous iteration, Op Soga IX, resulted in over 400 arrests and significant financial seizures during the 2022 Qatar World Cup. The upcoming tournament, spanning from June 11 to July 19, could present increased betting opportunities due to its global match schedule.
