Reconstruction Halted Over Financial Strain
Acesite (Phils.) Hotel Corporation has put the Waterfront Manila Hotel & Casino rebuilding on hold, highlighting increased expenses and lackluster tourism, as outlined in a recent disclosure to the Philippine Stock Exchange. Initially dubbed the Manila Pavilion Hotel, this establishment faced destruction in a March 2018 fire, resulting from electrical issues, which tragically led to the demise of six PAGCOR staff members.
Escalating Costs and Budget Concerns
The reconstruction budget has now swelled to PHP3.6 billion ($58.5 million), a sharp rise from prior estimates. Contributing factors include surges in material, labor, and fuel expenses, exceeding the insurance coverage limits. Additionally, structural and layout modifications have further inflated costs.
Tourism and Market Challenges
Originally set for a soft reopening in 2026, plans slowed as Covid-19 progressed. Current market conditions show insufficient foreign visitor numbers and muted tourism forecasts amid geopolitical tensions. Manila’s gaming scene, facing a “serious plateau” due to online expansion, also complicates recovery efforts.
Future Plans and Financial Strategy
A return to construction is tentatively planned for 2028, contingent upon a stabilized tourism sector. Acesite has reserved PHP764 million ($12.4 million) in retained earnings toward future rebuilding efforts and will allocate funds for maintaining the property’s structure.
Conclusion: Cautious Approach Moving Forward
The corporation is adopting a prudent investment strategy, awaiting a return to stable tourist activity and viable economic conditions to justify further financial commitments.
