Macau Casino STRs Surge 8.7% in First Half of 2026

Increase in Suspicious Transaction Reports

In the initial half of 2026, Macau gaming operators reported an 8.7% increase in suspicious transaction reports (STRs), according to the Financial Intelligence Office of the Unitary Police Service. Between January and June, 2,018 reports were filed by Games of Fortune Operators, the sector responsible for casinos, compared to 1,856 in the same timeframe of the previous year, as disclosed on July 7th.

Gaming Sector Dominates Suspicious Reporting

Gaming retained its status as the predominant contributor to suspicious transaction reporting, representing 73.3% of total reports in the year’s first half, marginally less than the 73.8% share in 2025. The cumulative number of reports climbed to 2,753, reflecting a 9.5% year-over-year increase.

Broader Trends in STR Reporting

While the gaming sector led the reporting, financial institutions and insurance companies contributed 526 reports, making up 19.1% of the total. Other institutions accounted for 209 reports, or 7.6%. The uptick in overall reporting was attributed mainly to heightened activity from the gaming industry. During the period, the Financial Intelligence Office forwarded 54 STRs to the Public Prosecutions Office.

Implications for the Gaming Sector

The rise in STRs highlights increasing scrutiny on Macau’s gaming sector, emphasizing the need for enhanced compliance and monitoring mechanisms. Industry players must stay vigilant to mitigate potential legal and financial risks associated with suspicious transactions. For instance, understanding regional impacts, such as Typhoon Bavi’s influence on travel, may also play a role in broader sector dynamics.
