Macau’s Gaming Share Increases
A recent survey conducted by CLSA reveals that the gaming sector in Macau is capturing a greater portion of visitor expenditures. Despite efforts to diversify with non-gaming attractions, casino play has become a significant motivation for mainland Chinese travelers. The study, encompassing responses from 800 Chinese nationals with prior gaming experiences in Macau, found 79% intending to visit within the coming year, highlighting sustained demand. Gaming accounted for 41% of the reasons to visit, rising from previous years.
Non-Gaming Activities Lose Momentum
The increased focus on gaming activities appears to be marginalizing non-gaming attractions such as entertainment and shopping. Although non-gaming still constitutes 59% of travel motivations, its share has decreased, affecting sectors like concerts and retail. Macau’s proximity, language benefit, and reputational safety contribute to steady visitation, with arrivals up by 5.5% compared to 2019 over the same period.
Travel Timing and Preferences
Visitors are increasingly aligning their travels with significant holidays such as October’s Golden Week, with 44% planning trips during this period. A shift in travel patterns sees a decline in off-peak travel, though this remains at 11%, providing a balance in gaming revenue streams throughout the year.
Discrepancies Among Income Segments
The survey indicates a divide between high-income and lower-income travelers. Those earning over RMB60,000 show more inclination towards increased spending on gaming and travel budgets. In contrast, same-day visitors, often from lower-income brackets, are rising, emphasizing a subdued expenditure capacity among non-premium visitors.
Casino Preferences and Regional Dynamics
Sands China and SJM remain favored operators, with Venetian Macao and Grand Lisboa topping casino destination preferences. Regional competition also emerges, as significant numbers of respondents consider visiting gaming destinations outside Macau, such as Singapore and Korea.
