Macau GGR Decline in July with Post-World Cup Recovery Expected

Macau’s July Gaming Revenue Forecast

Macau’s gross gaming revenue (GGR) in July is predicted to decrease by 5% to MOP21.0 billion ($2.60 billion), as reported by Citigroup. The brokerage remains optimistic about a rebound as the World Cup comes to an end. Initial estimates indicate that GGR reached approximately MOP7.3 billion ($904 million) in the first half of July.

Trends in Average Daily Revenue

The average daily revenue experienced an upward trend, rising to nearly MOP621 million ($76.9 million) from MOP590 million ($73.0 million) earlier in the month. Analysts George Choi and Timothy Chau from Citigroup suggest this increase is due to a reduced number of soccer matches, with only eight played last week compared to 14 earlier in July.

VIP and Mass Market Dynamics

Despite a stronger daily revenue rate, the VIP sector saw a decline in volume, falling between 0% and 3% month on month. Meanwhile, mass-market GGR faced a decline of 2% to 4%. There is an indication that casinos retained a higher proportion of wagers compared to the start of July.

Outlook for Post-World Cup Recovery

With just four matches remaining in the tournament, Citigroup anticipates a continued recovery in Macau’s GGR. The brokerage holds its forecast steady, projecting an average daily GGR of about MOP721 million ($89.2 million) for the remainder of the month. This optimism is echoed in the article Macau GGR Set for Recovery Post World Cup.

The Role of Upcoming Events

The conclusion of the World Cup is seen as a turning point for Macau’s gaming sector. Analysts highlight the impact of a forthcoming ‘star-studded event calendar’, which is expected to boost gaming revenue back to normal swiftly. Upcoming events are also anticipated in the Sands Shopping Carnival 2026 Returns to Venetian Macao.

Conclusion

Though July presents a dip in GGR for Macau, the anticipated end of World Cup distractions and a promising lineup of events suggest a positive outlook for rapid revenue recovery.
