Macau’s Taxi Expansion Linked to Ride-Hailing
Newly sanctioned taxi operators in Macau are now mandated to register with government-endorsed ride-hailing platforms. This requirement comes as part of the city’s strategy to shift towards app-based transportation services. The Transport Bureau initiated bids for 14 taxi licenses allowing for 700 vehicles, receiving 47 applications. Primarily aimed at replenishing the existing fleet, these new vehicles address upcoming expiration of current contracts due by 2028.
Bidding Requirements and Evaluation
Pang Man Kin, acting head of the Transport Bureau’s management division, stated that the eligibility for bidding businesses aligns with the 2023 conditions but includes new obligations. These encompass registration with an authorized ride-hailing platform, extra guarantee terms, and updated timelines for stamp duty settlements. Evaluation will heavily consider the license premium, deployment plans, and local management involvement.
Policy Momentum and Future Outlook
The tender aligns with policies from December 2025, aiming to grow Macau’s taxi services and develop ride-hailing legal frameworks. Authorities target the completion of tender reviews by Q4 and plan to disclose results shortly thereafter. Successful bidders will then ready operations with new taxis expected on the streets by mid to late 2027.
