Sands China Launches Youth Initiative for Responsible Gaming

Introduction to Sands China’s Youth Program

Sands China has rolled out its first-ever Responsible Gaming Youth Talent Development Program, aimed at equipping local university students with essential knowledge and skills in responsible gaming. This initiative is part of the Sands China Responsible Gaming Academy and stems from a collaboration between the company, the University of Macau’s Institute for the Study of Commercial Gaming (ISCG), and the Youth Volunteers Association of Macau (AJVM). This groundbreaking program supports Macao’s governmental goals and aims to cultivate a socially responsible new generation within the city’s tourism sector.

Program’s Structure and Student Involvement

The initiative offers a mix of professional training, project development, and international exposure. This blend provides students with both theoretical and practical understanding, encouraging innovative approaches to public education on responsible gaming. Interest in the program was significant, with roughly 150 students applying. Following a selective process, 32 participants advanced to form teams that developed unique proposals in areas like community outreach, digital engagement, and financial literacy.

International Exposure and Learning Opportunities

The most successful teams earned the chance to advance in the program, participating in a four-day educational tour in Singapore. This 23-member delegation included representatives from Sands China, ISCG, and AJVM, who explored global responsible gaming practices. Highlights included visiting Marina Bay Sands and engaging with local responsible gaming teams, as well as the National Council on Problem Gambling and WE CARE Community Services, to gain insights into Singapore’s comprehensive responsible gaming approach.

Impact on Future Responsible Gaming Initiatives

This initiative fosters collaboration among corporate, academic, and community players, offering students meaningful insights into responsible gaming. Through student-led proposals and cross-border exchanges, participants gained diverse perspectives from youth, researchers, social entities, and industry professionals. These insights are poised to inform future efforts in responsible gaming education and youth development across Macao.

Commitment to Community and Education

Dr. Wilfred Wong, Executive Vice Chairman of Sands China Ltd., emphasized the company’s dedication to supporting responsible gaming and youth development in Macao. Professor Davis Fong and Austin Vong echoed this sentiment, highlighting the program’s success in bridging educational theory with real-world applications. The initiative builds on Sands China’s long-standing commitment, dating back to the introduction of a self-exclusion program in 2004, and the launch of the Responsible Gaming Academy in 2025.

Conclusion

Sands China’s Responsible Gaming Youth Talent Development Program is a significant stride in nurturing socially responsible professionals in the gaming industry. By facilitating collaboration and hands-on experience, the initiative aims to bolster Macao’s efforts in promoting a sustainable gaming environment. Moving forward, Sands China remains committed to expanding this collaborative framework, working alongside government, educational institutions, and community organizations.
