Malik Beasley Denies Charges in NBA Betting Scandal

NBA Player Denies Involvement in Betting Plot

Former NBA player Malik Beasley has entered a plea of not guilty to four federal charges related to a betting scam during the 2023-24 season. Accusations suggest Beasley conspired with others to manipulate betting outcomes in four games. He was released on a $100,000 bond, with a court date set for August 6 in Brooklyn.

Details of the Alleged Scheme

Beasley, a former Milwaukee Bucks player, faces accusations of sports bribery, wire fraud conspiracy, honest services fraud, and money laundering conspiracy. Ed Davis, a former teammate, is also charged and named as Beasley’s alleged point of contact for bribery, which reportedly helped settle his gambling debts.

Other Individuals Linked to the Case

Another arraigned individual was Paolo Zamorano, an NBA agent, who likewise pleaded not guilty and was released on bond. Additionally, former player and coach Damon Jones was implicated as a co-conspirator, accused of using insider information for betting purposes.

Federal Prosecutors on Integrity of Sports

Joseph Nocella Jr., U.S. Attorney for the Eastern District of New York, criticized the schemes for undermining sports integrity. Both Beasley and other accused parties face potential extensive imprisonment terms.

Scope of the Betting Ring

Prosecutors allege the group, involving an unnamed Division II assistant coach, wagered hundreds of thousands of dollars. One notable bet secured $121,000. Conversations among conspirators highlighted internal distrust, leading to the group’s unraveling. This incident coincided with other illegal NBA betting accusations.
