Increase in Gongbei Checkpoint Traffic
The Gongbei gateway, a crucial link between Zhuhai and Macau, recorded over 64 million crossings in the first half of 2026, marking a 6% increase from the previous year. This data comes from the Gongbei border inspection station, highlighting that daily crossings exceeded 460,000 on multiple occasions, breaking earlier records.
Mainland Residents Boost Travel
The surge in passenger flow is largely attributed to the increase in mainland visitors to Macau, with daily movements of residents from Zhuhai and Macau remaining consistent. This pattern is pivotal for cross-border travel, as Macau’s tourism recovery leverages land routes.
Visitor Statistics and Trends
Macau saw 40.07 million visitors in 2025, a 14.7% increase from the previous year, with 82.6% arriving via land. Visitor numbers for the initial months of 2026 rose by 11.1% to over 18.1 million. Notably, same-day visitors climbed 17.6%, while overnight stays grew by 2.0%.
Outlook for the Summer Peak
The Gongbei station anticipates the summer peak, spurred by student tours, family trips, and short travels to Macau, could surpass first-half records. This is bolstered by events and business activities within the Greater Bay Area.
